While I was at D.I. looking for a deal on crutches the other day I found a portable manual typewriter from the 1930's for only $10; I just had to have it! I brought it home, cleaned it up, and now it works great. The kids (all of them) love it just as much as I do, even their friends are fascinated. It seems certain this will be a passing fancy but we have really enjoyed a distraction from video games and computers. I was playing with it this afternoon and wrote a little free verse (very corny):
Low Technology
Here we all sit,
Surrounded by gadgetry that goes beep,
Blip,
Ding.
Entertained at every waking moment.
No room for contemplation
And wonderment.
Then the find,
The rediscovery of antiquated machinery;
Fascination.
A line forms.
Necks crane to behold
The old manual
Typeqeirwe
Oops.
Typewriter.
What?
No "delete" function?
When you want to type the number one
you are supposed to use a lowercase "l"
Amazing.
Can we keep it mom? Please.
It seems we have acquired a new
Ornament for the coffee table AND
A new past-time
For the Whole Family.

I wish the DI's of California were like the ones of Utah. That is one thing about Utah I miss. I love shopping at DI. Here the DI is in a ghettofabulous neighborhood and everything is so picked over, there's nothing left. Plus, you have to drive out 15-20 minutes on the freeway to get there. So, congrats on the great find! It will make a great show piece around the house.
You seem to have the best luck at DI. Whenever I go I find nothing! Maybe we need to go shopping together!

What a sweet deal! It finally clicked when you mentioned reading my blog, that you yourself are a blogger, and I'm glad I found yours! One more way to keep up with my neighbors! Maybe we should figure out a way to get our VT done this way. LOL!
